- QuickBooks is brilliant. :) And it is relatively inexpensive. It is very user friendly.
- probably Quickbooks. If you don't know accounting, get a bookkeeper to help you set it up
- As an accountant who has worked with a number of small businesses, I think that QuickBooks is the best option. The next step (if your business is larger or you need something more complex) is Great Plains, which costs quite a bit more. Almost any bookkeeping/accounting firm will have QuickBooks expertise, so there is plenty of support available. Also, banks and some investors are familiar wtih QuickBooks, which helps when you are presenting reports. All in all, it's the most effective option. When you consider the value of your time, and the relative risk of making an error, I think it's actually more cost effective than keeping the books by hand - especially if you would have to learn bookkeeping to do it! Quickbooks is designed for non-accountants whose real expertise is in running their business, and whose time should be spent there. FYI, I'm in no way affiliated with any software company. I now work at a large energy company, this reflects my experience from working with two small businesses and working for/auditing several others at a public accounting firm.
